We employ a fully-qualified nurse practitioner who will deal with minor illnesses and chronic disease management. Also employed are four experienced and fully-qualified nurses who will take care of ear syringing, routine injections and phlebotomy and who are happy to offer advice on various matters. Specifically, the practice nurses look after:

• Immunisation of children. Drop in Clinics are held between 11.30 and 12.30 each Wednesday at Millwood Surgery. Please bring your child and reminder letter to the surgery together with the child’s record book.
• Vaccinations for holidays and other overseas travel. Advising on the appropriate vaccinations for different countries can take some time, so please make an appointment with a nurse, and this should be at least eight weeks before you intend to travel.
• Cervical Smears. National guidelines recommend that all women between the ages of 25 and 65 years be called for cervical screening. Women between these ages will be recalled automatically. Please make an appointment with the nurse. 
• Breast and testicular examination. The Practice nurses have a range of useful literature on self-examinations for both men and women and are able to give guidance and advice on these sensitive and sometimes difficult subjects.
• Stop smoking, weight loss, well person. The Practice nurses have a wide range of experience in giving individual counselling on lifestyle change and healthy lifestyle management. Please ask for an appointment.

Asthma

Nurse Alison Ball and Nurse Practitioner Amanda Abel are asthma specialist nurses and see patients on a regular basis at both Millwood Surgery and Belton Medical Centre. If you need to see your doctor they can be consulted during normal surgery times. If you would like to discuss your asthma with the nurse you are welcome to make an appointment. Follow up appointments are with the asthma nurse.

Diabetes

Diabetic patients are seen on a regular basis at Millwood Surgery and at Belton Medical Centre. If you need to see your doctor they can be consulted during normal surgery times. If you would like to discuss your diabetes with a nurse you are welcome to make an appointment.

Ante-natal clinics

All the doctors run ante-natal clinics. We work in conjunction with the James Paget Hospital to provide your ante-natal care. At Millwood Surgery there is also an ante-natal clinic run by a community midwife.

Family planning

Advice on all contraceptive services is available and most services are offered. Even if you only wish to discuss the matter, the doctors or nurses are happy to help you.

Minor surgery

Various minor procedures, including cryosurgery, are carried out at the discretion of individual doctors.

Child health surveillance

Monitoring your child’s development is available for children under five whose parents have given written consent. It is done by the doctors in conjunction with the Health Visitor at various stages.

Phlebotomy

Venepuncture (blood) clinics are available mornings only from 9.00 am at Millwood Surgery . At Belton the nurse will take blood as necessary (mornings only).

Smoking cessation

Amanda Abel, Karen Gibson, Maria Wynes and Anna Moyse are all qualified smoking cessation counsellors. A smoking cessation clinic is held each Wednesday afternoon at Millwood Surgery.

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Most travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because travel vaccination is not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service.

Non - NHS medical services

Examinations for special purposes (e.g. insurance, fitness to undertake sports, HGV, PSV, and seat belt exemptions), reports for private health insurance, private certificates and some vaccinations, are not provided under the National Health Service and are undertaken outside normal surgery hours. There is a fee for these services as recommended by the British Medical Association. These services are also available to patients from other practices.
